If you're planning to update your kitchen, one of the biggest questions you'll face is:
Should I paint my cabinets, reface them, or replace them completely?
As the owner of YDY Professional Construction, I've remodeled kitchens throughout the Tampa Bay area, and this is one of the most common questions homeowners ask.
The answer depends on your goals, your budget, and the condition of your existing cabinets.

Option 1: Painting Your Cabinets
Painting is usually the least expensive option upfront, but it's important to know its limitations.
Before painting, you should determine what your cabinets are made of. Solid wood cabinets generally offer the best long-term results. Cabinets made from lower-quality materials or with damaged laminate surfaces may not hold up as well over time, even with proper preparation.
Another thing to consider is durability. Factory-finished cabinets are baked and cured using specialized equipment that creates an extremely durable finish. Cabinets painted inside a home can look beautiful, but they typically won't match the same level of durability and resistance to scratches, moisture, and everyday wear as a factory finish.
Painting also doesn't change your kitchen's layout. You'll still have the same cabinet sizes, same storage space, and the same door and drawer configuration.

Option 2: Refacing Your Cabinets
Cabinet refacing replaces the doors and drawer fronts while covering the existing cabinet boxes with a matching veneer or laminate.
This can improve the appearance of your kitchen without removing all the cabinets.
However, the existing cabinet boxes remain in place, so you're still limited by the original layout and storage design. If your kitchen isn't functional today, refacing won't solve that problem.
While quality refacing products can look attractive, many homeowners who want a complete transformation eventually wish they had invested in new cabinetry from the start.

Option 3: Replacing Your Cabinets
Many homeowners assume replacing cabinets is far beyond their budget.
In reality, that's not always true.
At YDY Professional Construction, we're a family-owned company that buys directly from cabinet suppliers. Because we keep our overhead low, we're often able to install brand-new cabinets for much less than people expect.
If you're already planning to replace your countertops, the price difference between painting or refacing and installing brand-new cabinets may be smaller than you think.
With new cabinets, you can enjoy benefits such as:
A completely redesigned kitchen layout.
Better storage and organization.
Soft-close doors and drawers.
Full-extension drawer slides.
Taller wall cabinets for additional storage.
Modern cabinet styles and finishes.
Brand-new cabinet boxes with a fresh start.
Increased home value.
Instead of investing in older cabinets, you're investing in an entirely new kitchen designed to fit your family's needs.
Our Honest Recommendation
Every kitchen is different, and there are situations where painting or refacing makes sense.
However, if your countertops are also being replaced and you're looking for a kitchen that will last for many years, we generally believe replacing the cabinets offers the best long-term value.
Many homeowners are surprised to learn that a complete cabinet replacement is more affordable than they expected.
