Should You Replace Your Flooring Before or After Installing Kitchen Cabinets?

One of the most common questions homeowners ask before starting a kitchen remodel is:

"Should I install the flooring first, or should the cabinets go in first?"

The answer depends on the type of flooring you're installing, your budget, and your long-term remodeling goals.

At YDY Professional Construction, we help homeowners throughout Tampa, Brandon, Riverview, Wesley Chapel, Lutz, Odessa, Clearwater, and the surrounding areas make the right decision before their kitchen renovation begins.

Here's what you need to know.

The Short Answer

For most kitchen remodels:

  • Porcelain tile: Install the flooring first.

  • Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP): Usually install the cabinets first, then the flooring.

  • Hardwood flooring: Most professionals install the flooring first.

Each flooring material performs differently, which is why the installation order matters.

Installing Flooring Before Kitchen Cabinets

Installing the finished floor before the cabinets creates a continuous surface throughout the room.

Advantages

✔ Cleaner, more professional finish

✔ Easier to remodel again in the future

✔ No exposed flooring transitions if you change the cabinet layout

✔ Better for porcelain tile and hardwood

✔ Makes future appliance replacements easier

This method is commonly used when installing porcelain tile, since tile is extremely durable and won't compress under the weight of heavy cabinets.

Installing Cabinets Before Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

For floating floors like Luxury Vinyl Plank, most manufacturers recommend installing the cabinets first.

Why?

LVP needs room to expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity. Heavy cabinets placed on top of a floating floor can restrict movement and may lead to issues over time.

Benefits

✔ Uses less flooring material

✔ Can reduce installation costs

✔ Follows many manufacturers' installation guidelines

✔ Protects the floating floor's ability to expand and contract

This is the method we typically recommend for floating LVP products.

What About Glued-Down Vinyl Flooring?

Not all vinyl flooring is installed the same way.

If you're installing a glue-down luxury vinyl floor, it doesn't float like click-lock LVP. In many cases, it can be installed before the cabinets because it's permanently bonded to the subfloor.

The right approach depends on the specific product and the manufacturer's recommendations.

Does It Save Money to Install Cabinets First?

Sometimes, yes.

If cabinets are installed first, you don't have to purchase flooring that will never be visible underneath them.

For larger kitchens, this can reduce material costs, especially with premium flooring products.

However, many homeowners still choose to install flooring throughout the entire kitchen because it offers more flexibility if they remodel again in the future.

What If You Want to Change the Kitchen Layout Later?

This is one of the biggest reasons some homeowners install flooring throughout the entire kitchen.

If you move an island, relocate cabinets, or redesign the kitchen years later, you'll already have finished flooring underneath.

Otherwise, patches may be needed where the old cabinets once sat.

Does the Type of Cabinet Matter?

Whether you're installing:

  • White shaker cabinets

  • Custom cabinets

  • Frameless cabinets

  • Traditional cabinets

…the installation order is determined by the flooring—not the cabinet style.

Our Recommendation

At YDY Professional Construction, we generally recommend:

Porcelain Tile

✅ Install the tile first, then the cabinets.

Floating Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

✅ Install the cabinets first, then the flooring.

Glue-Down Vinyl

✅ The installation sequence depends on the product and manufacturer guidelines.

Every home is different, and we'll recommend the best approach based on your flooring choice, kitchen layout, and remodeling goals.

Why Proper Planning Matters

The order of installation affects more than just appearance. It can impact:

  • Flooring performance

  • Warranty compliance

  • Future remodeling flexibility

  • Material costs

  • Installation time

  • Long-term durability

Planning these details before construction begins helps avoid costly mistakes later.
